Military Money

I keep finding cool things in these WWII letters from overseas! This is from one of my great-uncles, who was stationed in Seoul, Korea for a time. He is paying my grandpa back for a care package full of things that he requested be sent, but since he didn't have "real" money, he sent this....

I assume this was a joke between my grandfather and my great-uncle, judging by the amount of underlining and "ha-ha's" written in the margin. I wonder what was in the package that he sent? Hmmm...things like that drive me crazy!

Anyway, I thought this would be a good post, since Patrick was just talking about his military play-money pogs in a post for Off Somewhere. It looks like this isn't a new idea, although the pog aspect might be.

But how weird would it be to carry around a bill for 5 cents?

Joke Cigarettes..No Shit

This is a pack of joke cigarettes that was available in one of the Naval training camps. I found this in a WWII letter that was sent to my grandpa from one of his Navy buddies, who was also his cousin! He sent it to my grandpa to show him what he was missing, since gramps was given a cushy desk job and transferred out of camp early.... Posted by Picasa

The "Amazingly Popular" Ring

I thought this was hilarious, and so here it is on the blog. This is another advertisement from a Song Hits magazine, which is also where the "learn the piano and instantly be popular" advertisement was from.

I love the tagline in black, because it is so totally inapproprate. The "amazingly popular" ring "sells to everyone". Now, that sounds a little desperate, wouldn't you say? When I read that line I see Old Gil from the Simpsons trying to sell an old, rusty computer. "Yeah, we know it sucks, but everyone keeps buying these stupid things! We don't know why! Shut up, Gil. Close the deal, close the deal!"

Check out the classy headshots. Thrilling! Posted by Picasa
